Dear Concerned Citizens:

The United States, which is presumed to be the most advanced nation on Earth, spends more per person on healthcare than any other nation in the world, yet ranks highest in infant mortality and next to the bottom in life expectancy amongst 24 industrialized nations.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reports that Americans paid $5,635 US per capita for healthcare in 2003. In Sweden, the country with the lowest infant mortality rate, each person paid just $2,594 US in 2003—less than half of what Americans paid. In Japan, the nation with the highest life expectancy, each citizen paid only $2,139 US—just 38% of the American healthcare bill. This picture was confirmed in September, 2004 when Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health reported that the health of U.S. children is worse in virtually all categories when compared to children in other industrialized countries.

Infant mortality and life expectancy are indicators of the health of a nation, and for the amount spent on healthcare in the United States, the failure of the American healthcare system is clear.
